The area concerned is situated on the peninsula between the Altafjord and the Porsangerfjord, south of Hammerfest (fig. 1). In contrast to the inland plateau (\"Vidda\"), the topography of the coastal area in Finnmark is rather broken. The mountains surrounding the Repparfjord reach altitudes between 600 and 700 m a.s.l., and the highest peak within the area discussed, Cuokkarassa, 1139 m a.s.l. The description of the older of the two substages, termed \"the Repparfjord substage\" deals with the area surrounding this fjord and the adjoining Repparfjord valley to the south. The younger substage, considered by far the more important one, and termed \"the Main substage\", coincides with the so-called Younger Dryas time in Fennoscandia. This dating is based upon extensive study of old shore-lines and C14 tests.
