A blue whale beached itself at Cathedral Rock, 3 kilometres east of Lorne on the Great Ocean Road, on 5 May 1992. Measuring 19 metres in length and weighing 50 tonnes, it took three industrial cranes to lift the mammal onto a low-loader, after which it was transported to Werribbee Sewerage Farm where it was placed in an acid bath.
