Description
Summary:Double hemispherical world map copied from Dutch maps of the early 1700s. Australia lacks an eastern coast and is shown joined to the great Southern Continent. Relief shown pictorially.; Wood block print, hand colored.; Includes panels of descriptive text.; This is world map, represented in two hemispheres. The map itself is not detailed. There are extensive captions, however, which surround the maps and which comment on the various continents and countries. The commentary was taken from "Zue kaban tsushi".; Not listed in Kokusho somokuroku.; Verso: Oranda shinyaku chikyu zenzu.; The commentary explains the Western view of heaven and earth, i.e. that it is round, that it rotates on it axis, etc. It also explains the concepts of latitude and longitude. There are symbols which represent the ocean, the seas, the boundaries, and the capitals.; Commentary outside of the border line mentions about "Megellanica"(=imaginary continent around Antarctica) as a possible sixth continent.; Also available in an electronic version via the internet at: http://nla.gov.au/nla.map-rm3806. Embossed title: Algemeene waereld kaart. 880-06 Zue kaban tsushi.
