Both Svalbard archipelago, located about midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, and Bear Island are marked by Mercator on the map as t'Nieulant (usually translated as Spitsbergen) were not discovered until 1596. This map and its variants are considered the first separate printed map devoted to the Arctic. Relief is shown pictorially.; French text on verso entitled: Le Pole arctique et la description des terres septentrionales.; Map 7 from: Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi et fabricata figura / per Gerardi Mercatoris. Editio Decima.
