Map of the Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Pole to latitude 60°North. The map is surrounded by a decorative border with four circular insets, three of which feature an island or islands within the perimeter of the larger map. Both Svalbard archipelago, located about midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, and Bear Island are marked by Mercator on the map as t'Nieulant (usually translated as Spitsbergen) were not discovered until 1596. This map and its variants are considered the first separate printed map devoted to the Arctic.
