2006年11月中旬から12月中旬にかけて,平成18年度の交換科学者として米国のマクマード基地及びドライバレー地域を訪れた.陸上生物の観測を実施しつつ,日本の南極観測とは異なる特徴的な訓練システムを体験することが出来た.米国基地では多様な訓練・教育のコースが充実しているが,特に現地でのフィールド技術の実習や環境保全の講習会については,学ぶ点が多いと感じた.
