These results suggest that the bacterial population at each depth of the deep-sea is well adapted to the environmental conditions, as has been suggested by A. A. YAYANOS (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., 83, 9542, 1986) with pure culture isolates from the deep-sea.
