Description
Summary:This paper aims at summarizing the previous results on wave normal directions of ELF hiss emissions in detached plasma regions of the magnetosphere, observed in the equatorial and off-equatorial regions of the magnetosphere and also at the ionospheric altitudes. These direction finding results, together with the associated morphological characteristics, are utilized to discuss the generation and propagation mechanism of detached plasma ELF hiss. It is found that all of the characteristics can be interpreted satisfactorily in terms of the quasi-linear cyclotron instability by energetic electrons with energy of a few to a few tens of keV.
