Summary: | Standing stock and distribution of phytoplankton chlorophyll were studied in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, along the course of the FUJI during the period from December 1982 to March 1983. Surface observations showed that the mean chlorophyll concentrations in the Subantarctic and the Antarctic waters in December were higher (>0.5mg/m^3) than those in February-March (<0.3mg/m^3) and those in the subtropical waters in two periods (<0.2mg/m^3). Surface standing stocks of nanoplankton (<10μm) did not change greatly over different water masses, while the microplankton (>10μm) showed a wide fluctuation and the relative contribution generally increased with increasing total phytoplankton concentration. Integrated chlorophyll stocks in February-March were in a range of 16-38mg/m^2 (0-200m) with microplankton contributions of 35-79%. |
