To build capacity for better environmental monitoring and research in the Arctic, the EU has funded the SCANNET-INTERACT Consortium, which consists of partners from all the Arctic countries and 33 research infrastructures located throughout the large environmental envelope of the Arctic and a further 8 research facilities have joined as "observers", including 2 Russian infrastructures. But more infrastructures are required for long-term monitoring and research and these should be strategically located.
