Summary: | Two types of ionospheric anomalies have been discovered recently in the polar cap; patches and arcs. Polar cap arcs are the focus of this study, which seeks correlation between arcs and total electron content (TEC) enhancements and amplitude scintillation effects. Simultaneous optical and radio frequency measurements were taken at Thule AFB and Qanaaq, Greenland, using an All-Sky Imaging Photometer (ASIP) and a specially equipped Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. Arcs were discovered to produce significant, rapidly varying TEC increases, and small but measurable amplitude scintillation. Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
