| Summary: | The naval shipyards are in the process of implementing the Bureau of Ships Management Information System for U. S. Naval Shipyards (MIS), which has as its keystone the production planning and control system and as its terminus the cost accounting system. The purpose of the MIS is to improve management techniques in order to reduce cost and meet the challenge of modern technology. A possible extension of the MIS is in the area of material redistribution between shipyards to forestall costly job delays and cancellations. This thesis explores the possibility of establishing a centrally managed redistribution system for material located in naval shipyards employing the techniques of rapid communications and automatic data processing systems. The area of direct material inventory (DMl), which is the most unstructured and uncoordinated, is used to study the possibilities of establishing a feasible integrated naval shipyard material control system to operate in conjunction with the present computerized logistics programs located at the Bureau of Ships.
