Iceland has held 1st place in the Global Gender Gap Index for 9 consecutive years. Nearly a century since women?s suffrage in 1915 and after a mass feminist movement in the 1970s and 1980s, an unexpected opportunity came from the financial crisis of 2008. In the shift from specializing in fishing to global finance, reckless investment and loose management by male elites caused a financial crisis that shook the nation. After the financial crisis, Iceland?s citizens chose a female prime minister who emphasized welfare policy, and an investment company promoting female values founded by women was established. After an era of creating inequality and distortion due to excessive competition, the time has come for a new era emphasizing sustainable growth and work-life balance. In a mature society, female values such as trust, cooperativeness, long-term perspective, and risk awareness are needed rather than male values of competition and aggressiveness. Promotion of female values in Japan is indispensable not only for resolving the labor shortage but also for social developments in business and politics. departmental bulletin paper Other/Unknown Material Iceland Mukogawa Women’s University Repository |
