Description
Summary:In this study we present vowel harmony in Nganasan from both synchronic and diachronic points of view. The labial/illabial opposition (u:i, ii.i) in Nganasan can be traced back toa a front/back opposition in the Uralic proto-language. In Proto- Samoyedic vowel harmony in disyllabic words is specified by the second syllable. When the second syllable had a nasal, the stem had a suffix with a back vowel. When the stem ended in a palatal, the suffix included a front vowel. In case of trisyllabic words the vowel in the third syllable specified the type of vowel harmony in the word.
