26 PICTURESQUE OLD FAITHFUL IN ACTION. The geysers of Yellowstone National Park alone would make the Park one of the most famous in the world. Here are found more and greater geysers than may be found in all the rest of the world put together. The other noted geyser fields are in Iceland and New Zealand. You may think of geysers as being water volcanoes. In the Yellowstone district the interior heat of the earth comes near to the surface. The water that penetrates the rocks becomes heated and driven upward. More water trickles in, and steam is formed by this water above. then the water on the surface begins to boil and to bubble, indicating an explosion. When a large pocket of steam has been formed, the explosion takes place and the surface, water is hurled far into the air. These explosions may occur frequently, or they may be several hours or several days apart. Some of them are of extreme violence; others are very mild. the geyser here seen is perhaps the most famous in the world. It is called Old Faithful because of the regularity of its outbursts. About once every hour it breaks forth so that it plays into a great stream 150 feet high. These outbursts continue for almost 5 minutes. Then the eruption loses force and the stream slowly descends. It is estimated that one of the eruptions of Old Faithful discharges 1,500,000 gallons of water, or 33,225,000 gallons a day. This would supply a city of 300,000 inhabitants. Scientists tell us that Old Faithful has been working at its present rate for at least 1,000 years. Other noted geysers near Old Faithful are the Bee Hive, the Giant and the Giantess. In all, there are 40 geysers near Old Faithful Inn.
