Two stages are pointed out: 1985–1991 and 1992–present.The authors show the continuity of environmental ethics with the traditional views of peoples of Yakutia, and record its politicised nature at the first stage. The formation of the regional environmental ethics at that stage was based on alarmism. It appeared as the idea of violated justice, compensation for the consequences of the Soviet way of developing the North.At the next stage, a system of interrelations between the local society and nature is established in three directions: nature management, environmental protection, and ensuring environmental safety. The ideas of steady development become widely accepted. An efficient system of environmental legislation was successfully created. A number of the republic’s principle environmental laws were passed. The vector of ethical and environmental ideas in Yakutia was defined by two main principles: the regeneration of culture and steady development. The idea of the regeneration of national culture inspired a number of studies into the issues of the traditional world view. Environmental education and training professional environmentalists became a separate area of work.It is emphasised that environmental ethics in the Yakut society has undergone significant changes over the last thirty years. The theme of ecology and environmental ethics has penetrated into public consciousness. The fragility and vulnerability of northern nature and the delicate balance of the system “man – nature – society” have become axiomatic to public consciousness.
