The projection of this map is call'd Mercator's the design in to make it useful both for land and sea. And it is laid down with all possible care. According to the Newest and most exact observations by Herman Moll Geographer 1719." Lettered below the image "L. Cheron delin." and "E. Kirkall sculp." Mercator's projection. There are 2 insets: Chart "to shew the degrees of the variation of the compass observed in the Atlantic & Indian Oceans in 1700 and in the Great South Sea in 1709-1710"; and, The North Pole. This map was traced to form the basis for the real and fictional places in Swift's Gulliver's Travels, published in 1726. However fictional Lilliput's location does not tally with the description in the text. Acquired by Monash University Library's 'Friends of the Library' program.
