Characterization of Bacteria From the Sea Ice of Antarctica

Bacteria isolated from the sea ice of Antarctica were brought to Southwest Missouri State University for study. Using typical characterization methods, an attempt was made to classify these organisms. They are Gram negative psychrophiles with a tendency to form filaments. The members of one group have a bean-shaped morphology and the members of the other group are filamentous rods which also form gas vacuoles. These organisms belong to the order Cytophagales and represent a new genus in the poorly defined taxon of Cytophaga-like bacteria.
