The importance of the book and of the author’s commentary in the foreword to the second edition of 1945 are uncontested and frequently talked over in the Laxness literature, yet the book is badly known outside Icelandic speaking circles, because there are no translations at hand. This paper tries to give an impression o f the various articles and essays by brief annotations and representative translations of spots and highlights.
