Ed.), Memorial University of Newfoundland, 1999. Education Bibliography: p. 66-75 Alcohol has been reported as the drug most commonly used by students in Newfoundland and Labrador Schools. Alcohol consumption is occurring with students in both urban and rural areas. This study sought to examine the range of resources in Newfoundland and Labrador junior high schools that are aimed at educating children about alcohol and at preventing alcohol abuse. It also looked at the methods that the schools were using to deal with alcohol-related problems which adolescents are experiencing and at the priority assigned to alcohol education in urban, as contrasted to rural areas. -- A 23 item questionnaire was developed by the author and completed by 84 educators from 30 rural and 16 urban junior high schools. The results indicated that most schools are equipped with alcohol education resources. Using videos dealing with alcohol issues was frequently listed as one of the main prevention methods. Overall, the amount of time spent on alcohol education was typically one to three hours throughout the school year. The results indicate that the alcohol education program in most schools has not been given the special attention that is deemed by the author to be needed. A comprehensive list of resource materials that might be used in alcohol education prevention programs was developed.
