Women's Studies Bibliography: leaves [168]-175 The St. John's Rape Crisis Centre was first established in 1977 as the Rape Crisis Committee of the Newfoundland Status of Women Council Now known as the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre, this feminist organisation has provided assistance to victims of sexual assault for more than two decades, mainly through a 24-hour volunteer crisis line. The RCC has helped many women deal with the aftermath of an assault and has also played a major role in educating the public and relevant agencies about the prevalence and effects of sexual violence against women. Relying on interviews and archival research, my thesis documents the vital work of women in this volunteer feminist organisation (1977-1990) and explores the organisation, philosophies and activities of this important component in the history of the women's movement in Newfoundland and Labrador.
