A new social studies program for Newfoundland and Labrador has been developed in recent years. To partially fulfill an expressed need for supplementary materials in the Grade Three area of the program a unit of curriculum and instruction entitled, Recreation in St. John's was developed. The unit deals with a number of recreational events and locations available to the citizens of St. John's. The topic coverage is not exhaustive but serves as an introduction to each of the events and locations presented. A slide/tape presentation and an accompanying teacher's manual were the media chosen to convey the instruction. -- The instructional development process required that a comprehensive needs analysis, learner analysis, task analysis, and media analysis be conducted prior to the actual production of materials. After the materials were produced they were subjected to both formative and summative evaluations. Advice and assistance during the formative evaluation resulted in minor revisions. The summative evaluation was conducted with two groups of Grade Three students. One of the groups was comprised of students from within the city of St. John's while the other group consisted of students from a community 20 kilometers outside the city. The results obtained from both groups indicated that knowledge increased after instruction had taken place; however, the greatest knowledge gain was with the group from outside the St. John's area.
