August 1, 2017 Andrea McGuire and Sarah Griffiths Ennis Introductions; Sarah (Sadie) Griffiths Ennis was born on October 20, 1946 in Placentia to parents James Griffiths, from Ship Harbour, Placentia Bay, and Mary Ann (Quirke) Griffiths, from Fortune Harbour, Notre Dame Bay; they met in Buchans; father initially married mother’s sister, and the two gave birth to four boys; mother’s sister died in childbirth, and later married Sarah’s mother; Sarah was “one of the last lot” of three daughters; her mother, who had been a widow, also had a son of her own; 2:50 – begins describing flour bags; she would play with flour bags in the pantry; 4:25 – describes all the uses for empty flour bags; the sacks were used to make clothing, school bags, shopping bags, quilts, blankets, bandages, slings; “they were probably used for shrouds, too”; the women embroidered them; vests were often made with flour bags; 5:30 – as the family grew up and left home, less bread was baked, and “the flour bag supply Audio Newfoundland Memorial University of Newfoundland: Digital Archives Initiative (DAI) |
