August 4, 2017 Andrea McGuire and Sally Peddle Introductions; Sally Peddle was born in Toronto, Ontario on March 13, 1937 to mother Florence, from Williamsford, Ontario, and father Douglas Mims, from Toronto, Ontario; mother was a dental nurse in Toronto; father parked cars for doctors at the hospital; the two met while working, and married in 1935; 3:05 – mother made vinegar in the basement, which was used for pickling vegetables; 4:15 – baking soda and warm water was mixed to treat an upset stomach; 4:55 – mustard plaster was applied to treat croup; 6:00 – a whole clove could be placed on a tooth to cure toothache; 6:57 – to clear sinuses, mint or eucalyptus leaves were added to boiling water in a bowl; a towel was wrapped around the bowl, and the steam was breathed in; 7:40 – gargling with salty water to clear one’s throat; 8:24 – brushing teeth with baking soda and salt; 9:12 – mother learned remedies while growing up on a farm; 10:50 – presents were wrapped with brown paper; they were a family of “string savers”; Sally was enlisted to untie knots, so the string could be used for other purposes; 12:20 – water from boiled potatoes was saved to make stock; 13:15 – moved to Newfoundland with husband Walter Peddle in 1966; they met at church; husband was born in Newfoundland; describes move to Newfoundland; 18:00 – has introduced mother’s cures and remedies to her family members; 18:58 – built their Spaniard’s Bay home in 1969; initially, the couple started a mink farm, but the value of mink pelts dropped, and they lost their savings; Sally then worked as a kindergarten teacher; taught from 1968 to 1989; 23:25 – husband was Curator of History at the Newfoundland Museum; he also taught private piano lessons; he and partner Rupert Batten collected Newfoundland outport furniture; he has written several books on the ...
