He learned how build Gander Bay Boats (also known as Gander River Boats) at a young age by watching his father Leslie Gilllingham, and began to build his own when he was sixteen years old. Basil has built more than one hundred boats and has spent fifty years guiding on the Gander River.

Gander Bay boat (Gander River boat) built by Basil Gillingham, winter 2012-13. “Gunnels, stem, stern, counter – all that’s spruce. She’s 24’4 long and 18 inches deep. She’s 27 inches on the counter where the motor is, and she’s 28 inches on the stem high,” Basil says. Made of all local woods, she’s finished with fir planks and fitted with a 15 HP Yamaha outboard motor.
