Cod fish hooked with nylon stockings: Lillian Dwyer's hooked rugs, Tilting

A rug or mat hooked by Lillian Dwyer, with a cod fish hooked with dyed nylon stockings. Lillian learned this method of rug hooking at a rug hook camp.

She studied nursing at St. Clare's Hospital in St. John's and was the community health nurse on Fogo Island until she retired. She continues to work part-time with community health. Her husband, Clem, was a school teacher. They have two sons. Lillian has been hooking rugs for years, and has done courses with well-known rug hooker Deanne Fitzpatrick in Nova Scotia, along with a number of courses at the Anna Templeton Centre in St. John's. In the summer months, Lillian attends a rug hooking camp, where rug hookers from all over the province get together to work on projects, share their skills and attend workshops. Currently, Lillian is passing on her skills with a Thursday night hook-in at the Fire Hall in Tilting, where women from all over Fogo Island get together to learn from her and other rug hookers. As a member of the Heritage, Entertainment, and Recreation Society (HERS), Lillian helped set up a project where women were hired to learn textile arts and make products to sell for the Tilting Come Home Year, 2007. Lillian taught the women how to hook rugs. In passing down her skills, Lillian is helping preserve the knowledge of hooked rug making on Fogo Island.
