Aloysius taught himself Gaelic and botany, reported by The Newfoundland Herald

Aloysius was not only a farmer, as an Irish descendant, he also learnt Gaelic by himself through books and tapes. Further, he was a self-taught botanist and studied numerous books on the subject.

His mother's family came from Waterford and his father's family from Kilkenny in Ireland. He was a farmer and also taught himself the Irish Gaelic and botany. During his life, He was active in preserving and promoting the Irish-Newfoundland culture and traditions.
