[1:45-7:50] Smith reads a story he wrote about a local man named Archie Loder, aka Uncle Archie, who had an old tar-covered punt that was used as fuel one bonfire night. [8:42] Smith tells a story about trouting and how he inadvertently caught a fish one day. [10:20] Smith describes the games and play he took part in as a child. [11:15] As a boy, Smith says him and his friends would catch gulls and have them as pets. [12:12] Talks about winter activities, such as ice fishing, sliding and skating and playing hockey. [13:13] Smith talks about attending school in Hant’s Harbour. [17:10] Smith talks about the traditional work in the area, which was mainly fishing. [17:50] Talks about being a teacher for a month and three days. [20:17] Smith discusses how he made money berry picking and got 25 cents a gallon. [21:13] Talks about where he got his clothing when he was a child, most of which was handmade by his mother. [21:11] Recalls how only one house in Hant’s Harbour had indoor plumbing and how the rest would public water from public wells and carry it with a hoop a pails. [23:21] Smith discusses how people would grow their own food, mostly vegetables. He also talks about keeping animals, mostly goats. [24:29] Smith tells a story about using goats to haul wood. [26:19] Smith describes the “Sunday meal”. [26:53] Smith talks about Christmas traditions, such as Christmas concerts. [29:36] Smith discusses home remedies, such as a homemade molasses lozenge. [31:14] Smith describes the forms of transportation in the community when he was younger. [32:20] Smith lists the kinds of music he listened to growing up. [33:54] Smith talks about attending dances and hot suppers. [35:54] Smith’s closing remarks about growing up in an outport community.
