Summary: | western a Western men; the fishermen who came from Placentia Bay, Fortune Bay, etc. to fish in St. Mary's Bay during late spring and summer. The number of schooners has diminished from 20 or 30 in 1935 to one in 1966. The men are still referred to as 'Western men' or 'Herbs'. It seems that the name 'Western men' originated from the fact that most of them came from the Western side of Placentia Bay, but why they are called 'Herbs' I have no idea.
