To prevent oneself from getting _water pups_ ( water whelps) it is customary among fishermen, especially drogger fishermen on the Grand Bank, to wear bronze chain around their hand wrists. This chain is supposed to keep the sleeve of the oil or rubber jacket from chafing the wrists. The fishermen believe that the jacket "cheafs" the wrist and kills the hairs and the pores fill up [reverse] with water, which causes inflammation and consequently boil-like lumps on carbunches on the wrists. My father still wears thick span yarn coiled about ten or a longer times around his wrist to keep his jacket from chafing his wrist. while he is wearing the yarn, he will not get pups but if he gives up wearing it, he gets them.
