Or otherWISE (WAYS?) a policeman was comin' after 'EM, or the Mountie was comin' after 'em,or take 'em away,you know,put 'em in [jail],AN' all this. JW. This is when they were _naughty_ and so forth? Yeah. B. Yeah. JW. Would they (say). HP. Anything to frighten the youngster. B. Everything to frighten the youngster! YOU KNOW, that's the worst thing ever done: frighten YOUNGSTERS. JW. Would they say that to the child when they want to stop it going,say,to _the stage-_ _head_,or [to a well], or something like that? Would they threaten 'em then? Or would they just threaten 'em when they were _naughty_? B. I suppose. They'D ALL used(to)threaten 'em when they was._naughty_, you know,when (they didn't obey). When (they disobey) they'd threaten 'em this stuff,you know,and this _trimmin_' that they'd get,or the.you know,in the good many cases 'twas _the Devil_.was comin' after ('EE?), That was the same thing: that was_the_ _Black Man_ JW. Did they ever used to threaten children with some old man who (had) lived around the place who was a bit odd? Was there and old man round Long Island used to chase children? HE (AS??) B. (Oh) yes.
