In this last class, there occurs to me the pronounciation of the steel sealer's name, BEOTHUCK (BEOTHIC), as Bo-it-ick, as I used to hear it invariably among my illiterate neighbours at Elliston when, about 1910, this ship first came to Nfld., said neighbours never having heard of the name Beothuck for our aborigines, using therefor the term _Red Indians_ on the extremely rare occasions necessary for them to use a name at all. In this pronoiciation, the o is long, both i's are short and the accent is on the middle syllable.
