In this context the phrase implies 'don't be shy!, help yourself to whatever you see on the table.' 'Take hold' is often used in a work situation involving father and son. The might be sawing wood, the father having hold of one end of the bucksaw while the son just looks on. It is then common for the father to say to the son,'take hold boy'. A father or older male will make the same remark to a son /younger male/ male of same age after they have loaded a hand slide with wood. The time comes to haul the load and making reference DNE-cit (W.K.)
