If we did something in a hurried, careless way, she would would use the expression. For instance if my sister was forced to do the dishes and in her haste to get them done she broke a dish my mother would usually grumble at her in a critical manner telling her that she was like a pig before thunder. It was used in much the same way as we now use " like a bull in a China shop Yes DICT CEN.
