Summary:rot n The oil in this book [c.1820] is, of course, "cod oil', formerly "train oil" or just "train". Later, this 2 word name distinguished it from the mechanically rendered "medicinal cod liver oil," and it was often further differentiated as "rotted cod oil" or "rot oil," indicative of its method of manufacture, which was to merely store the cod livers in casks or vats, (and allow them to rot into blubber, the oil collecting on top.)
