Summary:riddle n page. There are those made with long, rough poles, or longers, fastened to stakes driven into the ground. There must be hundreds of miles of paling fences and these are considerably more formal than the heavy-looking 'longer' type. A rare style today is the '_riddle-rod_' or simply 'riddle' fence. The _riddle fence_ was commonly used years ago beacuse there was no need for nails. Pickets, slim enough to be springy were merely woven onto three main bars. The main bars were sometimes nailed to the posts but these too could be woven onto upright posts or inserted in notched. Quite often fences make The riddle fence was made by weaving slender sticks onto three main bars. PRINTED ITEM G. M.
