It was considered a challenge to the person whose buttons were rubbed by the hand of the challenge ;much in the same way as in the age of chivalry to slap a person " across the face" with a glove was the act of issuing a challenge [reverse] Should the person whose buttons you rubbed refuse to fight then he was branded a coward or "fraidy cat" by his peers.
