They used to do that for to "fill 'em out" you know. "[i.e., the background colour] The rock moss used was the greyish-green scaley lichen which is found in abundance on the big rocks in the area. "They'd boil it away till it steeped out good. . . " . . . The colour obtained by this process/ was a "barky" colour (i.e., a light rust-brown). W. J.
