Summary: | payton head n A special type of head was used in many areas of Newfoundland which differed from the simple mechanism described [see 'head'] in which the spindle is connected directly to the large wheel. This special type of head was commonly known as a "jenny head", or a "payton head", and was probably a recent introduction in the Newfoundland spinning tradition. This head made spinning much easier, and therefore became quite common. G. M. Story JAN 1976 JH JAN 1976 Not used Not used Withdrawn |
