The custom was always and a fun times now for to get a 'poker man' to sing the pokers and he used to sit in the boat and be hauled along in the meantime. This was before they had a hand winch or hoisting engine for hauling boats on the launch. Today they are mainly used for hauling boats from where the owner built them to the launchway. This is not so customary now either as tractors are employed to haul over the bigger boats and 45 ft longliners. [reverse] Two of the old ''poker men'' at Hibbs cove were Alfred Petten and William Henry Dowie. Both of them are now dead. They were both about 70 when they died.
