Sunday,August 1, I was visiting at the home of friends in Fox Harbour when a neighbor used this term in reference to another man. The tone was a joking one, the matter not serious (staring at someone approaching but the usage was unexpected. The person thus addressed immediately informed me that he has not heard the [reverse] term for many days (years) but that it had been a familiar expression of his grandmother's. A 27 year old teacher from Tilting told me the expression 'pot augre days' is familiar to her and it means simply 'days long ago' or 'old fashioned.' Yet another friend from Fogo explained that a pot augre was a large drum in which tar was boiled for use in dipping the fish traps.
