In Canada, we do not agree about its pronunciation.Anything less than an equal distribution of accent on the three syllables was quite wrong, I was told. One must say NEW FOUND LAND. It seemed that that was its original name, and that it must ever be so. However, we soon discovered that we were to experience as many differences of pronunciation in various parts of Newfoundland as had been our lot in other parts of Canada. After ten days of indecision, we decided that the most authentic claims favoured a pronunciation with major emphasis on the last syllable, placing a secondary stress on the first syllable and slurring over the middle one. The result: New (fund) LAND. We can assure the reader that, although Newfoundlanders themselves do not always use this pronunciation, it is accepted rather generally.
