On streets where there were no hoppers . . . there were the night-carts - horse-drawn carts followed by two men who would pick up the buckets of "night soil placed in from of each house and empty them into the carts. The night carts started to come along around midnight, and they carried oil-fed torches which gave off a flare of light and much smoke. PRINTED ITEM G. M.
