It is about the same size as Iceland (a little over 41,000 square miles), and tri- angular in shape: on the west, the Great Northern Peninsula juts north- ward to Labrador; the southwestern corner reaches toward Nova Scotia (sixty-five miles away) and New England; the eastern tip (the Avalon Peninsula), extends far out into the North Atlantic, only 1, 700 sea miles from the British Isles and on nearly the smae lines of latitude.
