Description
Summary:Nonia .Newfoundland Outport Nursing and Industrial Association, popularly known as _Nonia_.came into existence [in 1924] as a result of the great scarcity of nurses in the outports. The object of the Association was twofold: to provide em- ployment so that communities could contribute to the cost of a nursing service, and to raise the general standard of living by increasing earn- ing power. In 1934 the government took over from the Association the res- ponsibility of providing nurses for the outports . By this time, however, it was apparent that the industrial side of the organization had filled a need in the lives of women and the Association decided that its efforts should be continued. As a result of constant coaching and training [in the arts of weaving, dyeing and spinning] a number of women have become extremely proficient in a variety of skills and their products have attracted international attention.
