These names some- times described some physical characteristic in or near the field, its size or shape or location in relation to the farmstead, but more frequently it carried the Christian name of one of its owners - often the man who cleared it and first worked it - followed by the element "meadow." The high incidence of the term "meadow" in Freshwater field names reflects the dominant pattern of land use and crop rotation and it is significant that this term was predominant in field names not only in the St John's study area but also on the Cape Shore. The word "_garden_" is also used in Freshwater, not alone to designate the small vegetable and fruit producing unit near the homestead but arable plots as well. See cited quotation.
