stick pin A _PEN_ to a person from the south coast of nfld is an instrument for writing. But a safety pin of _stick pin_ [PT] was pronounced with a lengthened form of the "e" sound and became "_safety peen_". Of course there were no stick pins, they were _he's peens_ [PT] in cops La Pune and in other parts of the South West Coast [my instructor in this cause [Reverse] tells me that he has never heard the term "stick pin" to mean a pin with a head: To him it is simply a "pin". You had to have some way of distinguishing between a safety pin and a stick pin, so that is probably why we have to two terms.
