For example, if my sister wants me to pass her some- thing from the top of the high-fi, she would likely say, "Pass me that machine?" if she couldn't remember the name of the article for some reason. Machine here does not refer to a machine as a mechanical apparatus. I am not aware of whether or not my younger brothers use this word in the same sense. If they don't use it themselves they do understand it. "Machine" is often the most obvious item in the designated place, but not always. Probably heard from my family. My mother (50) and father (51) were both reared in St. John's.
