Description
Summary:letter n 357. Used in poor time & particularly,in the St. John's area, of JUMBO plug tobacco which sold for 25cents a stick (note not _PLUG_) and which divided evenly into five letters at 5 cents each. Many general stores had a tobacco cutter that operated on the principle of a cheese cutter but with a much heavier blade. Only tobacco that had the brand name in relief on the stick itself could be so divided - though I believe that a small portion of any brand came to be called a "letter". Nevertheless, the usage began with the JUMBO brand. DNE-cit JH 3/73 Used I Used I Used I letter of tobacco Checked by Jordyn Hughes on Fri 17 Jul 2015
