lord 2 n The People here tell a remarkable Fact if it is a true one of a Kind of duck Cald here Lords & Ladies [_Histrionicus_ _histrionicus_ (L.)][S]125[S] who they say at times Pursue the Gulls whom they Persecute till they make them Dung which they catch with great dexterity before it reaches the water & immediately Leave off the Chace [S]125[S] Lords and Ladies is a popular name for the male and female Harlequin Ducks, Histrionicus histrionicus (L.). Ducks do not behave in this way. Banks has here confused them with skuas which typically chase gulls making them drop their catch (not their dung) which the skuas then seize. .
