Description
Summary:salmonier "An order by Commodore Cayley, _Dover_, at St. John's, 11th Oct. 1723, that John Masters and Phill. Wattson are to be allowed to prosecute their salmon fishery on Great and Little Salmonier . . . Rivers, " SALMONIER RIVER (NTS St. Catherine's) and LITTLE SALMONIER RIVER (NTS Placentia), introduces a specific which does not find a place in the dictionaries and does not seem to occur outside Newfoundland as a place name. It is composed of English salmon and what was originally a French suffix, later anglicized, -ier, to denote an occupation, a salmon-fisher. It is accented like bombardier and cavalier.
